For years, RV enthusiasts have dreamed of a motorhome that blends luxury with the ease of driving a car. Many envision something compact, easily maneuverable, yet packed with all the comforts of a larger rig. The Wingamm Oasi 540.1, a groundbreaking 17-foot motorhome, is finally arriving in the United States, promising to fulfill this very desire. After overcoming hurdles to enter the American market, this Italian-designed marvel is set to redefine expectations for compact RVs.
Having observed the RV landscape for years, a clear trend has emerged. While massive, opulent Class A motorhomes still exist, a growing number of buyers are seeking something different. They desire the high-end features and comfort but without the intimidating size and price tag of a behemoth. The idea of navigating a 35-foot bus, or managing its associated costs, is becoming less appealing. Accessibility and ease of use are now paramount.

The appeal of a smaller, more manageable motorhome is undeniable. Imagine the freedom to explore scenic routes, easily park in urban environments, and enjoy fuel efficiency, all while still indulging in luxury amenities. This is precisely the niche that Wingamm, a seasoned Italian manufacturer, recognized and expertly addressed with the Oasi 540.1. This innovative RV bridges the gap between bulky Class C coaches and minimalist Class B vans, offering a unique driving experience akin to a standard car.
The journey to bring this exceptional motorhome to American roads has been lengthy, but the wait is finally over.
A Legacy of Italian Craftsmanship Meets Modern RV Needs
Wingamm isn’t a newcomer to the RV world. With roots dating back to 1977 in Italy, the Turri brothers, originally furniture makers, transitioned their expertise into crafting high-quality RVs. Inspired by the agile peregrine falcon, Wingamm aimed to create campers that were both robust and nimble, designed for comfortable and confident journeys.
Initially, Wingamm customized vans by adding fiberglass camper shells. By 1982, they refined their designs into the signature monocoque fiberglass body construction still employed today. The Oasi line, meaning “Oasis” in Italian, became a cornerstone of their offerings, known for maximizing space within a compact footprint. Based on the Fiat Ducato chassis in Europe (known as the Ram ProMaster in the US), the Oasi pioneered the space-saving drop-down bed system. This ingenious feature allows for a spacious living area that transforms into a comfortable bedroom at night. Wingamm’s focus has always been on luxury within a smaller scale.
The Oasi 540.1, the model now available in the US, is a continuation of this legacy, with its original design dating back to 2010. It created significant buzz at the 2023 Florida RV SuperShow, showcasing its unique appeal to the American market.
“This little guy is based on the Italian market Fiat Ducato and comes equipped as it would in Italy. In America, we know the Ducato as the Ram ProMaster. The Ducato found underneath this camper could technically be considered a Holy Grail. The ProMaster was sold in America with a 3.0-liter Iveco F1C diesel four. This one has a 2.3-liter Iveco F1A diesel four. Both engines are rated at 175 HP. When Wingamm releases the U.S. version, it’ll come with the 3.6-liter gasoline V6 making 276 HP. Wingamm’s people tell me that this European model was imported for display only and can never be registered here.” – Mercedes Streeter, The Autopian
“First, you’ll notice just how tiny it is. Wingamm is marketing it as a Class C. However, at 17 feet, 6 inches [long], it’s as short as something like a Winnebago Solis Pocket. It’s shorter than many of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter conversions and it’s even shorter than a regular cab, long bed pickup. And unlike the aforementioned Winnebago, this has a lot more features and doesn’t feel nearly as cramped.” – Mercedes Streeter, The Autopian
Initially, the plan was to adapt the European Oasi 540 to American preferences, creating the Oasi 540.1. This involved incorporating feedback from RV shows to tailor the model specifically for the US market.
Overcoming Launch Delays to Reach the US Market
The anticipated arrival of the Oasi 540.1 faced unexpected delays. Originally slated for fall 2021, the launch was postponed several times, causing concern among eager customers and investors. Supply chain disruptions stemming from the global pandemic significantly impacted production timelines.
To address these concerns and provide clarity, communication with Wingamm USA’s PR representative, Jennifer Buonantony, revealed the complexities involved. Certifying the motorhome to meet US regulations was the first major hurdle. The US-spec Ram ProMaster cutaways, built in Mexico by Stellantis, needed to be shipped to Boston, then transported to Italy for conversion into motorhomes, and finally shipped back to America. This intricate process was further complicated by pandemic-related parts shortages, affecting both Stellantis and Wingamm’s European suppliers.
These delays were primarily due to the unavailability of essential parts needed for motorhome construction. However, with supply chains now normalizing, Wingamm has successfully built prototype Oasi 540.1 units. These prototypes are currently undergoing final testing and certification in Italy before being shipped to the US.
Wingamm acknowledged these delays in a public statement:
“The initial delays were a result of Covid related supply chain issues and then there were some challenges sourcing materials and parts from Wingamm’s US suppliers. We are thrilled to let our customers know those challenges are now behind us and we expect our long awaited US Oasi 540.1 debut to begin soon. Updates will first be released through Scott Watson on his YouTube channel “Go Small. Live Large!”. We are grateful for the continued support from our valued customers and the RV community at large as we have worked to bring Wingamm to America.
Thanks for your patience!”
Recent updates, including a first look video by Scott Watson, confirm that the American Wingamm Oasi 540.1 is indeed on its way.
Inside the American Wingamm Oasi 540.1: Compact Luxury Redefined
The Wingamm Oasi 540.1 immediately captivates with its distinctive exterior. Resembling a Class C motorhome, its seamless, rounded fiberglass body sets it apart. Its remarkably small size is equally striking.
At just 17 feet, 6 inches in length, it rivals compact camper vans like the Winnebago Solis Pocket and is shorter than many popular pickup trucks. Yet, unlike typical camper vans, the Oasi 540.1 maximizes interior space, feeling surprisingly roomy within its compact dimensions.
Stepping inside the rear entry door reveals an interior that defies expectations. Described as a “TARDIS” – bigger on the inside than it appears on the outside – the Oasi 540.1 offers ample headroom and freedom of movement. Unlike cramped camper vans, you can walk through the interior comfortably without squeezing sideways. The signature drop-down bed system is a key feature, creating a spacious living area during the day.
The interior build quality is exceptional, with premium materials and comfortable seating that surpasses many standard RVs. Even high-end camper vans often compromise on interior quality, but the Oasi 540.1 delivers a truly luxurious feel, justifying its price point. It includes a well-equipped compact galley, a complete wet bath, and effective insulation with expanded polyurethane PU and both traditional and radiant floor heating.
The only notable compromise is the cassette toilet, a feature some may find less convenient than a traditional black tank. However, the Oasi 540.1 compensates with abundant molded fiberglass storage, including a rear compartment large enough for multiple cassettes.
Powering the US version is a robust 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine producing 276 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque, driving the front wheels through an automatic transmission. US-specific modifications also include a redesigned entry stair and a grab handle for enhanced accessibility. The Wingamm badge replaces the Ram emblem, signifying its unique identity.
House power is supplied by two 95 Ah AGM batteries combined with a BOS LE300 lithium battery hybrid system for extended battery life. An optional upgrade to dual lithium batteries is available. Standard solar power comes from a 210W roof-mounted panel.
Buyers can choose between two exterior styles: the Fashion Edition with detailed Wingamm graphics on a white base, and the Black Edition, featuring simpler black graphics on a white body. Optional features include a tow hitch, bike rack, microwave, television, and various interior upholstery choices. Uniquely, Wingamm even offers an option to include a set of plates and silverware with your purchase.
Beyond the 540.1, Wingamm intends to introduce other Oasi models to the US market, including the Brownie, City Pro, 610 GL, 610M, 610 ST, and 690 Twins, each with distinct interior layouts and based on the Ram ProMaster chassis.
Wingamm will also offer rental programs in Florida, Texas, and New York, allowing potential buyers to experience the Oasi 540.1 firsthand. The rental cost is even waived upon purchase. For servicing, the Ram ProMaster components can be serviced at any Ram dealership, while Wingamm plans to utilize mobile RV mechanics for the coach portion.
While a firm launch date and final pricing are still pending, the updated price is listed at $188,500. Considering the Oasi 540.1’s combination of compact size, luxurious features, and superior build quality compared to many larger and more expensive RVs, it presents a compelling value proposition in the compact luxury motorhome segment. Compared to smaller, less well-equipped camper vans from brands like Airstream and Winnebago that cost significantly more, the Wingamm Oasi 540.1 stands out as a potentially game-changing option.
The arrival of the Wingamm Oasi 540.1 in the US market is highly anticipated. With production underway and deliveries expected soon, it promises to be a significant success, offering a unique blend of European design, compact maneuverability, and luxurious comfort to American RV enthusiasts. Stay tuned for further updates from Wingamm as they prepare to launch this exciting new motorhome.
