Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle (BEV) owners in the United States and Canada are set to gain access to Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network, starting February 2025. This significant move will incorporate over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers across both countries into the Mercedes me Charge service, streamlining the charging experience for Mercedes-Benz EV drivers. Canadian drivers will gain access to the Tesla Supercharger network later in 2025.
This integration means Mercedes-Benz BEV drivers will enjoy seamless “Plug & Charge” functionality at Tesla Supercharger locations. To ensure compatibility for current Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles equipped with CCS1 ports, a North American Charging Standard (NACS) to CCS1 adapter will be made available through authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz will begin integrating NACS ports directly into its electric vehicle production line for the North American market, starting in 2025.
Dimitris Psillakis, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, emphasized the importance of this expansion: “As our technologically advanced and highly compelling all-electric vehicle portfolio continues to grow, we recognize that a critical component for a seamless ownership experience for our customers is to ensure convenient access to a broad charging network. Adopting the NACS standard in our electric vehicles and opening the Tesla Supercharger network to our battery electric vehicle customers represents an important step forward as we continue to build a strong foundation to bring additional, game-changing all-electric vehicles to the market. Together with our fantastic dealer partners, we remain committed to reimagining the future of mobility and setting the benchmark in the luxury segment.”
Streamlining the Electric Vehicle Charging Experience with Tesla Superchargers
The integration of the Tesla Supercharger network is a key enhancement to Mercedes me Charge, Mercedes-Benz’s comprehensive charging service. This service already encompasses a wide array of charging networks, including Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, IONNA, Electrify America, EVGo, and ChargePoint. With the addition of Tesla Superchargers, Mercedes me Charge will offer access to over 110,000 public charging points across the United States and Canada, providing Mercedes-Benz drivers with unparalleled charging accessibility.
Franz Reiner, Chairman of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG, highlighted the customer-centric approach: “By opening access to Tesla Superchargers in North America to our customers, we underline our commitment to providing our customers with as many charging options as possible. The fast-growing network of charging points available in Mercedes me Charge will now expand to over 110,000 public charging points across the United States and Canada, providing Mercedes-Benz drivers with an industry-leading charging experience whenever and wherever they choose to charge.”
Mercedes-Benz BEV owners will benefit from the “Plug & Charge” system at Tesla Superchargers. This feature simplifies charging initiation, automatically starting the session upon plugging in and handling payment processing seamlessly in the background. To ensure smooth “Plug & Charge” operation at Tesla Superchargers, a complimentary software update will be available for compatible vehicles through authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Affected customers will be contacted to schedule their update. Charging can also be managed through the Mercedes-Benz app or the vehicle’s MBUX infotainment system.
Tesla Superchargers will be incorporated into Mercedes-Benz’s “Navigation with Electric Intelligence,” which intelligently routes drivers, factoring in efficient charging stops and charging times. Mercedes me Charge also provides real-time information on charger locations, availability, status, and pricing through the Mercedes-Benz app and MBUX system. This ensures Mercedes-Benz drivers have all the necessary tools for a convenient and informed charging experience when utilizing both Tesla Superchargers and other networks.
NACS Adapter and Future Integration for Mercedes-Benz Electric Vehicles
To support current Mercedes-Benz EV owners with CCS1 charging ports, Mercedes-Benz will release a certified NACS to CCS1 DC fast charging adapter. This adapter will enable these vehicles to utilize Tesla Superchargers. It will be available for purchase at authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the United States in Q1 2025 for $185, and in Canadian dealerships in Q2 2025, with Canadian pricing to be announced closer to launch. Customers will receive notifications when the adapters become available. Mercedes-Benz emphasizes that this NACS to CCS1 adapter is the only adapter rigorously tested and certified for safety and full compatibility with all Mercedes-Benz BEVs and NACS DC fast charging points.
Looking ahead, starting in 2025, Mercedes-Benz will begin equipping its new electric vehicles for the North American market with integrated NACS ports. This transition will eliminate the need for an adapter for future Mercedes-Benz EVs to charge at NACS-compatible DC fast charging stations, further enhancing charging convenience for customers. This move aligns Mercedes-Benz with the evolving charging standards in North America and demonstrates a commitment to providing a streamlined EV ownership experience.
Mercedes-Benz’s Comprehensive Ecosystem for Electric Vehicle Charging
The adoption of NACS and the integration of the Tesla Supercharger network are the latest advancements in Mercedes-Benz’s broader strategy to create a comprehensive EV charging ecosystem. In November 2023, Mercedes-Benz launched its High-Power Charging network in North America, deploying Mercedes-Benz branded 400kW chargers across multiple states, with plans to expand to half of US states by 2026. Furthermore, the IONNA joint venture, involving Mercedes-Benz and seven other automakers, is set to launch its first charging stations this year, aiming to establish 30,000 high-power charging points across North America to accelerate EV adoption.
Through these initiatives, Mercedes-Benz is actively building a robust and versatile charging infrastructure for its electric vehicle customers, ensuring convenient and reliable charging options whether they choose to charge at home, at public charging stations, or on long journeys utilizing the newly accessible Tesla Supercharger network. This multi-faceted approach underscores Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to leading the electric vehicle revolution and providing a premium and user-friendly EV experience.
