Karl Benz is widely credited with inventing the first practical gasoline-powered automobile, the Benz Patent Motorwagen, in 1885. His company, Benz & Cie., laid the foundation for modern automotive design and production. Simultaneously, Gottlieb Daimler, along with his business partner Wilhelm Maybach, was also developing high-speed gasoline engines and automobiles. Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), Daimler’s company, produced their first automobile in 1886.
The paths of Benz and Daimler, though initially separate, would eventually converge. A key figure in the Mercedes-Benz origin story is Emil Jellinek, an Austrian automobile enthusiast and Daimler customer. Jellinek, impressed by Daimler’s cars, entered them in races under the pseudonym “Monsieur Mercedes,” after his daughter Mercedes Jellinek. He also commissioned Daimler to build him a new, more powerful and advanced car, which he insisted should be named Mercedes. This 1901 Mercedes 35 HP is considered the first modern automobile, setting new standards for automotive design.
In 1926, facing economic pressures after World War I, Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft merged to form Daimler-Benz AG, officially bringing together the legacies of Benz and Daimler. The newly formed company adopted the brand name Mercedes-Benz, combining Daimler’s engine expertise and Benz’s pioneering automobile designs, and the rest, as they say, is automotive history.
