Mr Mercedes Review: A Gripping Series Starring Brendan Gleeson

Season 1 of Mr Mercedes immediately grabs your attention, introducing compelling characters – both good and bad – that will have you hooked. Just like Mrs. Shullivan and myself, you might find yourself binge-watching all three seasons in a single weekend. This captivating mystery thriller, with a touch of sci-fi, is anchored by the always impressive Brendan Gleeson. He portrays Bill Hodges, a retired homicide detective adrift after an amicable divorce. Hodges, seemingly with nothing left but his tortoise Fred (insist on calling him a tortoise, not a turtle!), rediscovers his purpose when drawn into the chilling case of Mr. Mercedes.

Bill Hodges, played masterfully by Brendan Gleeson, is a man wrestling with the aftermath of a broken marriage and estrangement from his daughter. His life takes a sharp turn when he becomes consumed by the unsolved crime of Mr. Mercedes. This unidentified serial killer gained notoriety for mowing down innocent people waiting in line at a job fair with a stolen Mercedes Benz, leaving behind a trail of death and trauma. The stolen Mercedes, abandoned at the scene, becomes the chilling moniker for this elusive killer.

By the second season, the identity of Mr. Mercedes is revealed, shifting the narrative into new and unexpected territory. Season three takes a slightly different direction, exploring the lives of the job fair attack survivors as they grapple with the long-term consequences of Mr. Mercedes’ horrific act. While perhaps more intense than the previous seasons, season three maintains a darkly comedic edge, a signature Stephen King touch that makes the series uniquely unsettling yet entertaining.

The supporting cast is excellent, perfectly complementing Stephen King’s masterful storytelling. King even makes a cameo appearance as one of the imagined victims in a restaurant scene, a playful nod to his own macabre imagination. Mrs. Shullivan and I were thoroughly entertained by all three seasons of Mr Mercedes. However, we were also relieved when the series concluded, as we found ourselves perhaps a little too engrossed in Stephen King’s world of murder and suspense. A quick dive into a Walt Disney classic was definitely needed to lighten the mood and return us to reality!

For its gripping plot, stellar performances, and Stephen King’s signature storytelling, I give Mr Mercedes a strong 8 out of 10 IMDB rating. It’s a must-watch for fans of crime thrillers and anyone who appreciates a series that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
