Decoding the VAN.EA Architecture

Mercedes-Benz engineers have meticulously focused on aerodynamics, drivetrain optimization, tire technology, and chassis design. The core objective is to maximize driving range while optimizing battery capacity, a crucial factor in managing vehicle weight and overall costs.

Modularity and scalability are central to VAN.EA’s design philosophy. This approach not only facilitates significant scale effects but also fosters synergies through streamlined and accelerated development and production processes. VAN.EA’s architecture is built around three key modules:

VAN.EA-C: Premium Commercial Vans for Diverse Applications

Similar to the private van versions, SAE Level 2 automated driving will be available at launch, with SAE Level 4 capabilities planned for the future to unlock the potential of driverless transportation in commercial settings.

Andreas Zygan, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Development, emphasizes the purpose-built nature of VAN.EA and its contribution to sustainability: “According to the ‘electric-only’ strategy, VAN.EA is developed from scratch as a purpose-built electric vehicle, fully leveraging the advantages of the new technology. Our target of more than 50% BEV share by 2030 goes hand in hand with a significant reduction in CO2-emissions across the entire lifecycle of new vans.”

Expanding Markets and Customer Reach

Mercedes-Benz Vans is strategically targeting growth in key regions, particularly in Europe and the United States. While Europe remains its strongest market, the company recognizes significant growth potential in the U.S., especially for premium commercial large vans. The introduction of VAN.EA-based commercial vans in the United States is aimed at achieving substantial sales growth by 2030. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz Vans plans to introduce VAN.EA-based private vans to the U.S. market for the first time, catering to the demands of luxury-seeking customers. This marks a significant expansion into the American private mercedes van market.

The RV sector is another area of focus, with Mercedes-Benz Vans planning to expand its “built from factory” RV van portfolio with new fully electric midsize and large camper vans based on VAN.EA. A Global Production Network for Electric Vans

Mercedes-Benz Vans is restructuring its global production network to support its electrification strategy. A new dedicated electric Light Commercial Vehicle (eLCV) plant in Jawor, Poland, will be the first of its kind for Mercedes-Benz Vans, aiming to establish benchmarks in productivity, lean operations, and sustainable manufacturing of premium eLCVs. This plant, along with all Mercedes-Benz Vans-owned plants, will operate with net carbon neutrality. Notably, the Jawor plant aims to source 100% of its energy needs from renewable sources, including photovoltaics, wind power, and geothermal energy.

The Düsseldorf plant in Germany will produce VAN.EA-based large vans alongside the eSprinter and Sprinter ICE models. Ludwigsfelde, another German plant, will become a competence center for eVan customization, particularly for recreational vehicles, while continuing to produce Sprinter and eSprinter models. The Vitoria plant in Spain will manufacture VAN.EA-based midsize vans.

Mercedes-Benz Vans: Leading the Charge in Electrification

Mercedes-Benz Vans has a long-standing commitment to electric mobility, pioneering CO2-emissions free vans in Europe as early as 2010 with the Vito E-CELL. By 2023, the company offers fully electric variants across all van segments. VAN.EA represents the next crucial phase in this electrification journey. From 2026 onwards, all midsize and large mercedes van models based on this new architecture will be exclusively electric. Mercedes-Benz Vans already holds a significant market share in Europe for electric large and midsize vans and aims for continued strong growth in the EV sector, having already sold over 40,000 eVans.
