For owners of classic Mercedes vehicles, upgrading the audio system can often present a unique set of challenges. Finding components that fit seamlessly into the original design, especially speakers, can be surprisingly difficult. This is particularly true when seeking 4-inch speakers for older models. After extensive searching for a suitable solution for my 1984 300td, I discovered a near-perfect option that combines great sound with minimal modification: the Rockford Fosgate R14X2 Prime 4-Inch Full Range Coaxial Speakers.
The search for compatible 4-inch speakers for older Mercedes models often leads to disappointment. Many aftermarket options simply aren’t designed to fit the specific dimensions of these classic cars. While some discontinued, high-end Boston Acoustics speakers were once considered a viable, albeit expensive, solution, they are no longer readily available. This scarcity necessitates a more proactive approach, involving careful measurement and a bit of ingenuity.
My method involved a detailed examination of speaker specifications and dimensions. I started by visually assessing potential candidates based on product photos, looking for designs that appeared likely to clear the original speaker grill. This initial screening narrowed down the options, after which I delved into manufacturer datasheets to obtain precise measurements. Crucially, I took detailed measurements of the speaker opening in my Mercedes 300td. This meticulous approach led me to the Rockford Fosgate R14X2 speakers, which, on paper, seemed like they could almost drop straight in.
Upon receiving the Rockford Fosgate R14X2 Prime speakers, it became clear that my measurements had paid off. These 4-inch coaxial speakers are indeed remarkably close to a perfect fit for the Mercedes 300td. As illustrated in the image, only a minor modification is needed to achieve seamless integration. Specifically, the foremost mounting tab on the speaker frame requires trimming. The remaining tabs align perfectly with the existing mounting points. In fact, the mounting hole on one of the tabs even lines up precisely with the screw that secures the original speaker grill – a testament to the accuracy of careful measurement and a satisfyingly straightforward installation process.
Beyond trimming the speaker tab, the only other modification needed is to shorten the standoffs on the speaker grill itself. Because the grill now rests slightly on the speaker mounting tab, it sits a fraction higher at the back. To resolve this, I carefully removed approximately 1/8 inch from the standoff using sharp dykes. This minor adjustment allows the grill to sit flush once reinstalled, maintaining the original aesthetic.
While I’m not a dedicated audiophile chasing the ultimate sound perfection, I appreciate good audio quality. And while my rebuilt Dynaco ST70 tube amplifier remains my benchmark for exceptional sound, these Rockford Fosgate speakers deliver impressive performance, especially considering their affordable price point. I listen to a wide range of music, including classical, which demands a broad dynamic range from speakers. For the modest investment of around $33 for the pair and a mere 20 minutes of installation time, including soldering the connections and performing the minor modifications, I am thoroughly pleased with the upgraded sound in my classic Mercedes. The Rockford Fosgate R14X2 speakers offer a fantastic, budget-friendly way to breathe new life into the audio system of your vintage Mercedes.
