Mercedes Petronas F1: Reigning Supreme in Modern Formula One

Mercedes’ resurgence to the pinnacle of Formula 1 began with the establishment of their works team in 2010, marking the foundation for a spectacular ascent through the Grand Prix ranks. The team immediately ignited excitement with the comeback of the legendary Michael Schumacher, but it was their on-track performance that truly captured attention. Nico Rosberg secured three podium finishes in their debut season, setting the stage for his groundbreaking pole position and victory double at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix.

The subsequent year saw Lewis Hamilton join Rosberg, forming a formidable partnership that would engage in epic title battles. As the Silver Arrows, they dominated the sport, becoming one of the most powerful forces in modern F1 history, until Red Bull emerged to challenge their supremacy. Despite this shift, with the arrival of proven race winner George Russell alongside rising star Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes remains a top contender, consistently striving for victory.

2024

Despite securing two victories each for George Russell and Lewis Hamilton with the often unpredictable W15 car, the team faced challenges leading to a fourth-place finish in the overall standings. The season was further marked by the shocking announcement of Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari at the end of the year.

2023

For the first time since 2011, Mercedes did not win a Grand Prix, as the W14 showed limited improvement over its predecessor. However, continuous development efforts enabled the team to overtake Ferrari for second place in the constructors’ championship at the final race of the season.

2022

Significant regulation changes reshaped the competitive landscape, and Mercedes’ W13 fell short of expectations, placing them behind Red Bull and Ferrari. New team member George Russell achieved their only victory of the season and outscored Lewis Hamilton, who experienced his first winless F1 season.

2021

Mercedes encountered their most significant challenge in the turbo-hybrid era. Lewis Hamilton narrowly missed the drivers’ championship to Max Verstappen of Red Bull, despite winning eight races. Nevertheless, the team managed to secure their eighth consecutive constructors’ title.

2020

Mercedes, and Lewis Hamilton in particular, reached new heights of performance. The reigning champion achieved 11 victories and broke numerous records on his way to equalling Michael Schumacher’s seventh drivers’ title, even after missing a race due to Covid-19. Valtteri Bottas added two more wins, contributing to another dominant double championship for the Silver Arrows, cementing Mercedes Petronas F1 as a force to be reckoned with.
