Mercedes GLA 2018 Thumping Noise: Seeking Expert Diagnosis

I’m reaching out to the community for insights regarding a puzzling thumping or clunking sound originating from the rear of my daughter’s 2018 Mercedes GLA-250 4Matic. This vehicle, purchased pre-owned in 2020 with 81,702 miles, has recently developed this intermittent noise at lower speeds, specifically when initiating movement from a standstill. Interestingly, the sound seems more prominent when driving straight, and it tends to dissipate as speed increases, leaving the car remarkably quiet under normal driving conditions.

Initially, suspecting tire issues, we took the Mercedes Gla 2018 to Firestone for a tire rotation and inspection. While they confirmed that the alignment and balance were satisfactory, they identified “cupping” on two tires as a potential culprit. Consequently, we replaced these two tires with new ones.

Hoping the issue was resolved, we embarked on a trip to return the car to our daughter. Initially, it seemed the thumping had disappeared. However, disappointingly, the sound resurfaced as we arrived at our hotel, manifesting again at slow speeds.

After some preliminary research, I’ve come across suggestions that this noise might be related to the rear differential or possibly a universal joint issue in the Mercedes GLA 2018.

Therefore, I am seeking advice and suggestions from anyone with experience or knowledge regarding similar issues in a Mercedes GLA 2018 or comparable models. Any guidance on diagnosing and resolving this on-and-off noise would be greatly appreciated. The sporadic nature of the sound, occurring seemingly randomly at very low speeds, is making it particularly challenging to pinpoint the exact cause. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
