Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team will continue to race in black, confirming the iconic livery is here to stay. Team Principal Toto Wolff has credited Lewis Hamilton as the driving force behind the change to black back in 2020, a move initially made as a powerful statement against racism and discrimination within Formula 1 and globally.
The shift from the traditional ‘Silver Arrows’ to a black livery was a significant moment, aligning with the widespread support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Mercedes aimed to amplify their commitment to diversity and inclusion, both within their team and the wider motorsport community. This decision resonated deeply with seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who has been a prominent advocate for social justice and equality.
In a recent Mercedes video reflecting on Hamilton’s impactful tenure with the team – prior to his move to Ferrari – Wolff and Hamilton revisited the pivotal decision. Wolff described the W11, the car first adorned in black, as “important,” highlighting its symbolic transition from silver to black.
Hamilton recalled his reaction upon learning about the team’s agreement to adopt the black livery. He expressed his initial disbelief and profound appreciation for Mercedes’ willingness to take such a strong public stance. The black livery has since become synonymous with Mercedes’ commitment to not only racing excellence but also to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment within Formula 1, a legacy that will continue even as Hamilton embarks on a new chapter.
