Mercedes Fob Key Not Working After Battery Change? Here’s What To Do

My Mercedes Fob Key stopped working after I changed the battery, and now the dealership is telling me it needs reprogramming for a hefty fee. Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a solution?

After my usual Mercedes key fob stopped functioning, I finally got around to replacing the battery. However, to my dismay, the key still wouldn’t work. I contacted a Mercedes dealer, and they informed me that waiting too long to replace the battery likely caused the key to lose its programming and that reprogramming would cost £100.

From what I can tell, the key is still emitting a signal. I even tried the camera trick – pointing the key at my phone camera – and I can see the rapid flashing infrared light, indicating it’s trying to communicate.

Hoping to avoid the dealer’s reprogramming fee, I spoke with a Mercedes specialist garage. They provided me with a set of resynchronization instructions, which I’ve also seen online:

  1. Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition lock. Then turn the key to position 0 and remove it.
  2. Within 60 seconds, press and hold the LOCK button.
  3. While holding the LOCK button, press the UNLOCK button 5 times.
  4. Check if the key functions correctly.
  5. If it still doesn’t work, repeat the procedure.

Unfortunately, this procedure is impossible for me to follow because the key is completely unresponsive and won’t even turn in the ignition. This means I’m stuck before I can even begin the resynchronization process.

Does anyone have any further advice on how to get my Mercedes fob key working again? I really want to get my main key back in action so I have a spare once more.

I also came across a suggestion on another forum that leaving the key in the ignition for 90 minutes might resolve the issue. I’m currently trying this method, but I’m not very hopeful.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
