Mercedes E60 AMG: The Ultimate W124 Sedan and a 90s Icon

For many car enthusiasts, the Mercedes-Benz W124 generation is synonymous with German engineering excellence and timeless design. While the standard models were already impressive, the collaboration with Porsche to create the 500E elevated the W124 to legendary status. But for those who craved even more power and exclusivity, there was the ultimate iteration: the Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG. Like many, my fascination with high-performance sedans from the 90s was ignited by films like Taxi, showcasing the raw speed and understated aggression of these German autobahn stormers. The Mercedes-Benz 500E featured in that movie was a revelation, but discovering the even rarer and more potent E60 AMG took my appreciation to another level.

The 500E, later known as the E500, was already a beast. Born from a unique partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, it was hand-built in Stuttgart and boasted a 5.0-liter V8 engine that propelled it to 60 mph in a mere 5.5 seconds. This put it in the same performance league as the Ferrari Testarossa, a supercar of its time. Limited only by its redline and 4-speed automatic gearbox, the 500E could reach an electronically limited top speed of 160 mph, earning it the moniker “König der Autobahn” – King of the Autobahn. It was a car that could handle daily driving duties with ease, yet also devour miles on a weekend road trip with the family and luggage in tow.

The Evolution to the E60 AMG: Unleashing More Power

In 1993, Mercedes-Benz rebranded the 500E as the E500 as part of their new naming strategy. But even more significantly, this year marked the birth of the ultimate W124 sedan: the Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG. This was not just a rebadged E500; it was a significantly enhanced machine built for even greater performance. The E60 AMG was equipped with the “AMG Technik Paket 957,” taking the already potent E500 to another level.

The heart of the E60 AMG was its upgraded engine. While the E500 boasted a 5.0-liter V8, the E60 AMG featured a larger 6.0-liter V8. This wasn’t just a simple engine swap; AMG meticulously reworked the M119 engine, increasing displacement and optimizing it for more power and torque. The result was a substantial boost in performance, making the E60 AMG even faster and more responsive.

Beyond the engine, the E60 AMG received further AMG enhancements. It was fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, the same design as found on the iconic 190E Evo II, giving it a more aggressive stance and improved handling. The suspension was also upgraded with stiffer AMG-tuned components, sharpening the handling and reducing body roll without sacrificing too much of the Mercedes-Benz renowned ride comfort. An AMG exhaust system not only improved exhaust flow and contributed to the power increase but also gave the E60 AMG a more distinctive and sporty sound.

The Rarity Factor: Hunting for a Needle in a Haystack

Pinpointing the exact production numbers of the Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG remains a challenge. Estimates generally range between just 100 to 150 units produced, making it an exceptionally rare car. This scarcity stems from the unique way these vehicles were often created. In the pre-merger era of AMG, some customers would purchase a standard Mercedes-Benz E500 and then send it directly to AMG’s facility in Affalterbach for conversion. AMG, still an independent tuner at the time, would then install their 6.0-liter V8 engine and perform the rest of the bespoke modifications.

This process makes it incredibly difficult to differentiate between a factory-built E60 AMG and an E500 that was subsequently upgraded. Determining the authenticity of an E60 AMG often comes down to verifying the VIN, which for true factory cars, should reflect the AMG designation. However, the aftermarket conversions add a layer of complexity, making the hunt for a genuine E60 AMG a true enthusiast’s quest. Finding one today requires a combination of luck, deep knowledge of Mercedes-Benz history, and perhaps a bit of serendipity. It’s this rarity and the story behind its creation that further elevates the Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG to dream car status for many.

An Unexpected Encounter in Vladikavkaz

My own encounter with a Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG was as unexpected as it was thrilling. A spontaneous trip to Georgia led me to Vladikavkaz, Russia, almost by chance. With some free time before a flight, I decided to explore the city, a place completely unknown to me. It was a fortunate decision. Having previously learned about a rare Dakar Yellow BMW M5 E34 located in Vladikavkaz, I reached out to the owner. While the M5 wasn’t readily available for a photoshoot at that moment, the owner, Konstantin, offered to show me some of his other cars.

To my surprise, Konstantin arrived in an incredibly rare Carlsson CM 62. A short drive later, I found myself in his garage surrounded by a stunning collection of 90s German super sedans. Amongst them, alongside the Carlsson, the Dakar Yellow M5, and an Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo, was the car that had captured my attention: a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG. It was a surreal moment, standing face-to-face with a dream car I had admired for years.

Behind the Wheel: Experiencing the “König der Autobahn”

Seeing the E60 AMG in person was already a highlight, but the opportunity to drive it was beyond expectations. The car, finished in Azuritblau, initially appeared almost black in the garage lighting. However, as Konstantin rolled it out into daylight, the deep blue paint revealed subtle violet hues, showcasing its sophisticated color.

Driving the E60 AMG was an experience that lived up to its legendary status. Konstantin recounted the car’s journey – sourced from an auction in Japan and meticulously serviced upon arrival in Russia. Interestingly, the car had already received a brake system upgrade in Japan and H&R suspension components, enhancing its handling while retaining a comfortable ride.

Behind the wheel, the E60 AMG felt both refined and brutally fast. The 6.0-liter V8 delivered effortless power, and the car reached high speeds with remarkable ease and composure. Despite its age, the E60 AMG still felt overwhelmingly quick, a testament to its engineering and performance pedigree. It truly lived up to its reputation as the “König der Autobahn,” a king among performance sedans.

A Lasting Impression of an Automotive Icon

My time with the Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG was brief but unforgettable. The sheer speed, combined with the refined Mercedes-Benz driving experience, left a lasting impression. Even in modern times, this 90s super sedan remains remarkably fast and capable. The E60 AMG is more than just a car; it’s a symbol of an era when performance sedans could deliver both exhilarating speed and everyday usability. It’s a rare gem, a true automotive icon, and an experience I won’t soon forget.
