Mercedes Flores Nevarez, a beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully at Rosetta Assisted Living in Burley, Idaho, on August 12, 2023, at the remarkable age of 98. Born on September 24, 1924, in Uvalde, Texas, Mercedes lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and community. Her journey, from a childhood on a Texas cattle ranch to a respected community member in Rupert, Idaho, is a testament to her resilience and unwavering spirit.
Born to Rosendo Torres Flores and Modesta Escobedo Luna, Mercedes was the youngest of her siblings. Her early years on the ranch instilled in her a sense of independence and strength. She fondly recalled her imaginative childhood, even turning bump gates into makeshift horses, an activity that resulted in a knee injury she endured throughout her life. In 1943, Mercedes married her beloved Roberto T. Nevarez at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Uvalde. After Roberto’s passing in 1970, Mercedes demonstrated incredible fortitude, raising their five youngest children single-handedly, embodying the true meaning of love at home and family dedication.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Mercedes was an active and cherished member of the Guadalupanas, a Catholic women’s organization. For many years, she served in various roles within the organization, most notably at the food booth during Rupert’s 4th of July celebrations, showcasing her commitment to community and service. Her faith extended beyond organizational involvement; she was also deeply involved in the Cursillo movement in her earlier years, further solidifying her spiritual foundation.
Mercedes had a passion for sharing her culture and talents. She enthusiastically taught children the vibrant art of “Bailables,” or folkloric dancing. From teaching the steps to sewing the traditional attire, Mercedes ensured the younger generation embraced their heritage with pride and joy. Beyond dance, she found solace and creativity in quilting, crafting beautiful pieces with her own hands. However, above all her passions and accomplishments, Mercedes’ greatest pride and joy were her ever-expanding family, including her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom experienced her boundless Mercedes De La Cruz Barriel At Home Love.
A funeral Mass to celebrate Mercedes’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, located at 802 F St., Rupert, Idaho. The service will be officiated by the Reverend Father Camilo Garcia. Following the Mass, burial will take place at Gem Memorial Gardens in Burley, Idaho, where she will be laid to rest.
