Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class Model Car Collection: A Detailed Look

As a passionate collector, I wanted to share my Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class 1:18 scale model car collection. It’s a modest collection, but each model captures a different aspect of the iconic W222 generation. Having spent some time examining these in detail, I thought it would be helpful to share a brief review alongside some outdoor shots of these beautiful miniatures.

1. Norev Mercedes-Benz V222 S-Class Facelift MOPF (S560) – Selenite Grey

This Norev rendition of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class, specifically the V222 long-wheelbase version in Selenite Grey representing the S560, has some notable features.

Pros:

  • Excellent Paint Quality: The Selenite Grey finish is smoothly applied and accurately represents the sophisticated tone of the real car.
  • Attractive Wheels: Norev has done a great job replicating the intricate design of the S-Class wheels, adding to the model’s realism.
  • Highly Detailed Interior: The interior is where Norev models often shine, and this S-Class is no exception. Details like the dashboard, seats, and trim are well-defined for a model in this scale.

Cons:

  • Front Fascia Proportion Concerns: The front grille and bumper area seems slightly off in proportion compared to the actual Mercedes-Benz W222 facelift.
  • Uneven Hood Panel Gaps: Panel gaps can be an issue with diecast models, and this one has some noticeable unevenness around the hood.
  • Photogenic Challenges: Interestingly, this model is harder to photograph well. It lacks the naturally elegant lines that make capturing good angles more straightforward compared to other W222 models.
  • Less Graceful Than Pre-Facelift: Subjectively, the facelift design, while modern, might not possess the timeless grace of the pre-facelift W222 S-Class.

2. Norev Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class (S550) – Metallic Black

Moving to the pre-facelift version, this Norev Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class S550 model in Metallic Black showcases the original design of this generation.

Pros:

  • Excellent Paint Quality: Just like the facelifted version, the Metallic Black paint is deep, glossy, and flawlessly applied, highlighting the car’s luxurious appeal.
  • Attractive Wheels: The wheel design is again well-captured, contributing to the overall accurate representation of the S-Class.
  • Highly Detailed Interior: Norev maintains its reputation for interior detail in this pre-facelift model, offering a glimpse into the opulent cabin of the W222.
  • More Timeless Design: The pre-facelift W222 design is arguably more timeless and classic, exuding understated elegance.

Cons:

  • Slightly Uneven Door Shut Lines: Minor imperfections in door shut lines are present, a common issue in diecast models at this price point.
  • Flimsy Hood Star Ornament: The iconic Mercedes hood star ornament feels a bit delicate and could be prone to damage.

3. GT Spirit Brabus 900 Rocket Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class – Black

Finally, we have the GT Spirit Brabus 900 Rocket, a high-performance, tuned version of the Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class, rendered in a sleek black finish. Being a GT Spirit model, it’s a resin model, which comes with its own set of characteristics.

Pros:

  • Awesome Stance and Paint: GT Spirit excels at capturing aggressive stances, and the Brabus Rocket is no exception. The black paint enhances the menacing look, and the model sits perfectly, showcasing the wide body kit and lowered suspension.

Cons:

  • Resin Model Limitations (Sealed, Wave Windows etc.): As a resin model, it’s sealed, meaning no opening parts. Resin models are also sometimes prone to wavy window effects, which was unfortunately the case here.
  • Window Issue and DIY Fix: The side windows were excessively wavy, detracting significantly from the model’s appearance. To rectify this, I carefully cut out the side windows to create a “windows down” look. While not ideal, it was a necessary compromise to improve the model’s presentation.

Final Thoughts

This small collection provides a nice representation of the Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class, showcasing both the elegant pre-facelift and the updated facelift versions, along with the extreme Brabus 900 Rocket variant. Each model has its strengths and minor flaws, common in the world of scale model cars. However, they collectively celebrate the design and engineering of the remarkable Mercedes-Benz W222 S-Class.
