Mercedes-Benz is globally renowned for its luxury vehicles, but its expertise extends far beyond passenger cars. The Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks division under Daimler Truck is a testament to this, crafting vehicles for the most demanding applications, including the defense sector. While the Unimog is iconic, their range includes other formidable heavy-duty trucks, and the Arocs 4042 AS 6×6 stands out as a prime example of their robust engineering.
This imposing 6×6 truck was showcased at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi. The Mercedes-Benz Arocs 4042 AS 6×6, equipped with twin rear tires, is engineered for extreme off-road conditions and heavy hauling. Its capabilities include transporting tanks and recovering disabled vehicles, thanks to its powerful double cable winch. The sheer size of this machine is undeniable: it measures an impressive 322.8 inches (8200 millimeters) in length, 98.4 inches (2500 millimeters) in width, and 137.7 inches (3500 millimeters) in height.
The Arocs 6×6 boasts a substantial 165.3 inches (4200 millimeters) wheelbase and a permissible gross weight of 40 metric tons. This weight distribution allows for nine tons on the front axle and 16 tons on each of the two rear axles. Furthermore, the Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks division states a gross combination weight of 250 tons for this vehicle, highlighting its towing capacity. Specifically tailored for defense applications and the IDEX exhibition, this Arocs 6×6 features a roof hatch, a tire pressure control system for varied terrains, and blackout lights for enhanced stealth and safety in tactical situations.
Powering this Mercedes army-grade colossus is the “OM 460,” an inline-six diesel engine with a massive 12.8-liter displacement. This engine generates 416 horsepower and is paired with a 12-speed Powershift 3 automatic transmission, which includes a manual mode for demanding driving scenarios. The engine itself weighs a staggering 2,237 pounds (1,015 kilograms), demonstrating the robust engineering within. Interestingly, for the broader Arocs range, an even larger 15.6-liter “OM 473” engine, producing 617 hp, is also available, showcasing the potential for even greater power.
Alongside the Arocs 4042 AS 6×6, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks also presented the Zetros 3351 AS 6×6 at the event. This model is designed for transporting wheeled or tracked vehicles, further emphasizing Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to providing diverse heavy-duty solutions. Complementing these 6×6 models was the Zetros 2036 A 4×4, configured as a material and troop transporter, rounding out Mercedes-Benz’s display of military-grade vehicles. The Mercedes-Benz truck 6×6 models, particularly the Arocs, demonstrate the brand’s capability to engineer vehicles that excel in the most challenging environments.
