Mercedes-Benz Sprinter All-Wheel Drive: Unlocking New Potential for US Drivers

Mercedes-Benz Vans has announced exciting updates for the US market, introducing a new all-wheel drive (AWD) system and a streamlined 4-cylinder engine lineup for the Sprinter model. Unveiled at the 2022 Work Truck Week, these enhancements promise to elevate the Sprinter’s performance, efficiency, and versatility, making it an even more compelling option for a wide range of businesses and drivers. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is set to redefine expectations in the commercial vehicle segment.

New Generation 4-Cylinder Engines: Power and Efficiency Combined

For the 2023 model year, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is transitioning to an entirely 4-cylinder engine range for both gasoline and diesel options. This strategic shift focuses on enhancing efficiency without compromising on power. At the heart of this change is the introduction of the OM654 diesel engine, a significant upgrade over its predecessors. This advanced engine is engineered to deliver smoother acceleration, increased torque, reduced emissions, and quieter operation with minimized vibrations.

The OM654 engine will be available in two performance levels: 125kW (168 hp) and 155kW (208 hp). This enhanced power is achieved through innovative engineering, including an aluminum block paired with steel pistons, a stepped recess combustion process, and NANOSLIDE® cylinder coating to minimize internal friction. Furthermore, the engine incorporates dynamic multi-way exhaust gas recirculation and near-engine exhaust gas aftertreatment, contributing to lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. The strategic placement of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system ensures efficient operation with minimal heat loss.

9G-TRONIC Transmission: Standard for Enhanced Driving Dynamics

Complementing the new engine lineup is the introduction of the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed transmission, now standard across all Mercedes-Benz Sprinter variants. This advanced transmission offers a multitude of benefits, including improved driving comfort, better fuel economy, reduced noise levels, and lower emissions. The wider overall gear ratio and quicker downshifts of the 9G-TRONIC transmission translate to more responsive acceleration and a more engaging driving experience.

Compared to the previous 7G-TRONIC transmission, the 9G-TRONIC boasts a higher first gear ratio for quicker starts and a greater gear spread, resulting in overall performance improvements and optimized engine efficiency across various driving conditions.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter All-Wheel Drive: Superior Traction and Control

The highlight of the 2023 updates is the introduction of a new, more capable all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, replacing the previous 4×4 system. The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter all wheel drive system provides enhanced power delivery, greater endurance, and a more seamless driving experience, empowering drivers to confidently tackle diverse terrains.

Unlike the previous engageable 4×4 system, the new AWD system features automatic torque on demand with a variable torque distribution of up to 50% per axle. The earlier system provided a fixed 35 percent of torque to the front and 65 percent to the rear axle when in 4×4 mode. This intelligent torque distribution ensures optimal traction and control in varying driving conditions. Importantly, the new Sprinter AWD system maintains the ground clearance, approach angle, departure angle, and breakover angle capabilities of its predecessor, ensuring that customers continue to enjoy the high levels of capability and quality synonymous with Mercedes-Benz Vans.

The Versatile Choice for Every Application

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter continues to be a leader in the commercial vehicle sector, offering a streamlined and versatile platform to meet the diverse needs of its customers. From daily commutes to demanding work environments, the Sprinter is designed to excel. Whether for parcel delivery, construction work, specialized upfits, or everyday driving, the 2023 Sprinter provides the comfort, power, and now enhanced all-terrain capability with its all-wheel drive system, making it ready for any project or adventure. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter all wheel drive is truly engineered to elevate your driving experience and expand your possibilities.
