Mercedes-Benz has officially entered the US motorcoach market with the debut of its brand-new Tourrider. I was fortunate enough to get an exclusive sneak peek at the first two prototype models at the 2022 UMA Motorcoach EXPO in Long Beach, California. My initial impression? This is one seriously impressive and stylish coach bus.
From the moment you set eyes on it, the Tourrider exudes a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. Let’s dive into some of the standout features that caught my attention:
Innovative Design Elements
Mirror System: Mercedes-Benz has engineered a truly unique mirror setup. At first glance, the proximity of the upper and lower mirrors might seem like they would obstruct each other. However, the clever angular design ensures a wide and clear field of vision, eliminating any overlap. The driver’s side configuration is slightly different due to the window placement, but the offset mirrors maintain excellent visibility without compromising the driver’s view. This thoughtful design showcases a commitment to both style and functionality.
Driver-Centric Dash: Stepping into the driver’s area, the spaciousness of the dash is immediately apparent. Legroom is abundant, allowing for comfortable, extended journeys. Visibility is outstanding, enhanced by the tall windows and strategically positioned mirrors. Practicality hasn’t been overlooked either – the dash includes conveniently placed outlets and ample storage compartments. I particularly appreciated the discreetly located cup holder, a smart touch for maintaining a professional environment. The steering wheel carries the classic Mercedes-Benz feel, and the instrument panel is designed for easy readability, ensuring a user-friendly experience for the driver.
Business Class vs. Premium Class
During the expo, Zane Grey, Director of Marketing and Development at Daimler Coaches North America, explained the distinction between the two Tourrider prototypes on display. One model is configured for “business class,” designed for long-haul routes with an emphasis on efficiency and passenger comfort. The other represents the “premium class,” built to offer top-tier luxury and amenities. While the business class can be customized with some premium features, the premium class is truly geared towards the ultimate passenger experience. This dual approach allows Mercedes-Benz to cater to a broad spectrum of operator needs and passenger expectations within the coach bus market.
Customer Feedback Shaping the Future
Mercedes-Benz isn’t just launching the Tourrider; they’re actively seeking customer input to refine the production model. Grey and his team have been presenting these prototypes to operators to gather valuable feedback. This proactive approach indicates that while the Tourrider is already impressive, Mercedes-Benz is committed to continuous improvement and ensuring the final product meets the specific demands of the US market. We can expect to see minor adjustments incorporated based on this real-world feedback.

The Mercedes-Benz Tourrider is poised to make a significant impact on the US coach bus landscape. Its blend of striking design, driver-focused features, and customizable class options positions it as a strong contender in the market. I’m eager to see the final production model and witness the Tourrider in action on US roads.
