The Mercedes-Benz Pagoda. An icon, isn’t it? For many, including myself until recently, admiration was often limited to appreciating its timeless beauty from afar. Based on the W111 platform and powered by a spirited inline-six, the Pagoda, especially the 230 SL variant, wasn’t necessarily famed for its raw power or track-ready performance. As some might say, like my friend Nigel Case describing the 280SL, it’s a car you could imagine gently cruising in, particularly with an automatic gearbox.
However, my preconceptions shifted dramatically when Nigel and the Classic Car Club of London handed me the keys to their 1964 Mercedes 230 Sl. This particular model boasted a crisp four-speed manual transmission, and I was instantly struck by how much sheer fun it was to drive. Winding through twisty country lanes and navigating the tight confines of city streets became an absolute joy. Nigel estimated the fuel-injected engine delivered around 150 horsepower, and being an early series car, it hadn’t yet accumulated the extra weight of later refinements. The result? A surprisingly sporty driving experience, instantly reminiscent of a classic Alfa Romeo, almost Duetto-esque in its lighthearted agility and the delightful rasp from its exhaust.
Driving through bustling London in the Mercedes 230 SL is a unique experience. Instead of the usual stares and occasional disdain often directed at supercar drivers in upscale areas, the Pagoda elicits genuine smiles from everyone, young and old. Its design transcends generations and automotive preferences, achieving universal adoration.
Perhaps I was slightly coy about the extensive mileage I intended to clock up in this vibrant red roadster, but the Classic Car Club certainly didn’t discourage my enthusiasm for exploring its capabilities. My journey began with a 160-mile stretch from London to Somerleyton Hall in Lowestoft, Suffolk. This route, a blend of highways and winding country roads, would quickly reveal the Mercedes 230 SL‘s true character and confidence-inspiring nature.
On the motorway, the 230 SL felt most at ease cruising around 3800 RPM, effortlessly maintaining speeds of 70-75 mph. Pushing it to 90 mph was achievable without drama, although it seemed to be outside of its relaxed sweet spot. It became clear that this Mercedes 230 SL is inherently a refined cruiser, designed for comfortable and stylish journeys.
My overnight stay at Somerleyton Hall, as a guest of Hugh & Lara Somerleyton, brought a stark contrast to a previous classic car experience. Having previously attempted, unsuccessfully, to start a frost-covered E-Type Jaguar in similar freezing conditions, I was prepared for a potentially reluctant start from the Mercedes 230 SL. However, the Pagoda proved to be remarkably different.
Intrigued by its cold-start prowess, I timed the ignition process. 3.72 seconds. That’s the inherent beauty of the W113 generation – it simply works, reliably and effortlessly.
Over the following week, accompanied by Florence Walker, our travels in the Mercedes 230 SL extended from the Suffolk coast in Aldeburgh to Wiltshire. The Pagoda continued to perform flawlessly, tackling everything in its stride.
Demanding country roads? Engage second gear, let the engine sing, and the 230 SL responds with enthusiasm. Highway cruising? Fourth gear, a gentle hum, and a constant stream of admiring glances from fellow motorists. Night driving? The high beams become your friend, illuminating the way with vintage charm.
It wasn’t until the final day in London that I finally lowered the soft top. London’s unpredictable sunshine offered a sufficient window, and the roof was stowed away in under a minute – a feature Mercedes proudly advertised as a sub-15 second operation at the time. Driving from North London to Wimbledon for a meeting became an unforgettable experience. The Mercedes 230 SL thrives in city environments, effortlessly gliding through streets in second gear, reaching a satisfying 4500RPM. The return journey to the Classic Car Club London HQ on Pitfield Street was equally enjoyable, bathed in the warm afternoon sun.
Every roundabout, every junction brought smiles. Business professionals, families, and passersby – everyone seemed to appreciate the open-top allure of the Pagoda. “More smiles per mile” truly captures the essence of driving this car. Ultimately, my experience behind the wheel of the Mercedes 230 SL only deepened my pre-existing admiration. This is a classic that not only meets expectations but surpasses them, proving that sometimes, meeting your heroes can be truly rewarding.
