Diving into the Parts Collection

For LEGO part enthusiasts, the 76924 set is a treasure trove of recolors, particularly in the striking 316 Titanium Metallic (TLG) / Pearl Titanium (BL). It’s exciting to see essential LEGO elements like 1M wide plates finally available in this sophisticated, gunmetal grey-black hue.

Titanium Metallic Parts List:

  • 1 x Brick Round 4 x 4 with Centre Hole
  • 2 x Plate 1 x 2
  • 6 x Plate 1 x 3
  • 4 x Plate 1 x 4
  • 6 x Equipment Cup / Teacup Saucer with Recessed Stud on Top
  • 3 x Slope Curved 2 x 1
  • 8 x Tile Round 1 x 1 Half Circle

This set also introduces several transparent-black windscreen elements for the first time, adding a sleek, dark touch to vehicle designs.

Transparent-Black Windscreen and Glass Parts:

  • 1 x Windscreen 2 x 6 x 2
  • 1 x Windscreen 2 x 4 x 2
  • 1 x Windscreen 3 x 6 x 1 Curved
  • 4 x Glass For Frame 1 x 3 x 3
  • 2 x Plate 1 x 2
  • 2 x Tile Round 1 x 1 Half Circle

The vibrant yellow elements are unmistakably destined for the sleek Mercedes-AMG SL 63 convertible. These yellow recolors bring a sporty flair to the build.

Yellow Recolor Parts:

  • 4 x Wheel Arch, Mudguard 4 x 2 x 2
  • 2 x Plate Round Corner 3 x 3 with 2 x 2 Round Cut-out
  • 2 x Brick Round 1 x 1 x 1 1/3 Quarter Dome
  • 1 x Tile 1 x 2 with Stud Notch Left & Right
  • 1 x Tile Special 2 x 3 with 2 Clips without Tab between Clips

Similarly, the black recolors are predominantly used for building the robust Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV, providing a contrasting color palette within the set.

Notably, the set includes 4 x Bar Holders with Hole and Bar Handle in Cool Silver Drum Lacquered / Metallic Silver for the first time. This is an excellent addition for builders who appreciate intricate, realistic mechanical details in their LEGO creations.

The Wheel Rim 24 x 12 with Black Tyre in Silver Metallic/ Flat Silver are also noteworthy for their relative rarity, previously appearing in only a couple of other sets.

Finally, the sheer number of 1×5 plates is remarkable – 15 in black and 10 in light bluish grey. This quantity rivals that found in much larger sets, suggesting their prominent role in the build, especially during the SL 63’s construction.

Decorative Elements: Prints and Stickers

The set boasts 19 printed parts, including spares, all beautifully detailed on yellow and black elements. These prints bring authentic Mercedes-AMG branding and detail to the models.

Printed Yellow Parts:

  • 1 x Plate 1 x 4 with Black Stripe print
  • 1 x Slope 30° 1 x 1 x 2/3 with Black Triangle Left & Right print
  • 1 x Slope Curved 3 x 2 with Stud Notch Left & Right with Headlight print
  • 1 x Brick Round Corner 3 x 3 x 1 with Tail Light & ‘AMG’ print
  • 1 x Brick Round Corner 3 x 3 x 1 with Tail Light & ‘SL 63’ print

Printed Black Parts:

  • 1 x Tile 1 x 1 with Console print
  • 1 x Tile Round 1 x 1 with Mercedes Logo Light & Dark print
  • 2 x Slope Curved 2 x 2 x 2/3 with White/Light Bluish Grey Headlight print
  • 2 x Plate 1 x 2 with ‘AMG’ print

The inclusion of both light and dark Mercedes logo prints is a thoughtful detail. LEGO could have easily reused one logo, but providing dedicated prints for each vehicle demonstrates a commitment to accuracy.

The sticker sheet is relatively minimal compared to other Speed Champions sets, offering optional realism for those who desire it. However, the G 63’s taillights are noticeably incomplete without sticker application.

Minifigure Drivers: Cool and Collected

The set includes two minifigure drivers, each exuding confidence with matching sunglasses and knowing smirks. Their unique torsos – white for one (6507083) and dark bluish grey for the other (6507080) – add a touch of exclusivity to these cool characters.

Building the Mercedes-AMG G 63

The G 63 build is surprisingly straightforward for a Speed Champions model. The most intricate section lies in the front end, employing a clever combination of bars, clips, and neck-brackets built upon an upside-down foundation.

The use of stacked 1×1 bricks instead of a single 1x1x3 brick is a minor curiosity, perhaps an intentional part selection to manage recolor part counts.

While the windscreen shape is a compromise due to the limitations of existing LEGO pieces, the overall G 63 model is recognizable and captures the vehicle’s essence. It might appear slightly simpler compared to other Speed Champions cars, but features like the opening bonnet, revealing a detailed (stickered) engine, add an element of interest.

The slight forward rake, achieved by a two-plate height difference between axles, adds a dynamic touch, though its appeal might be subjective. The inclusion of a rear seat, simulating a retracted soft-top, is a unique feature within the Speed Champions line.

Assembling the Mercedes-AMG SL 63

The SL 63, being the larger model in the set, offers a more involved build experience. It starts with a robust, brick-built chassis reminiscent of the Ford Bronco R (76905).

The tan corner 1×1 arch bricks integrated early in the build, alongside Technic elements, hint at clever shaping techniques to come. This stage also marks the beginning of the extensive 1×5 plate usage. The build gradually gains height, layer upon layer of plates contributing to its substantial feel.

The front end construction utilizes various bar connections to secure sub-assemblies, including a yellow 1×4 bar ingeniously integrated into the Technic lift-arms.

The finished SL 63 model effectively captures the aggressive yet refined look of the real car. The subtle use of 2×4 tiles to form the angled wheel arches is particularly well-executed. The printed elements and titanium metallic parts enhance the monochromatic silver color scheme, adding visual interest.

The tapered side windows, while pushing the boundaries of LEGO geometry, are a notable detail. The taillight stickers are crucial for completing the rear design, which otherwise appears somewhat plain.

The SL 63 interior is surprisingly spacious, comfortably seating four minifigures with ample trunk space – a delightful feature for playability.

Alternative Robot Builds: Beyond Cars

Stepping away from automotive designs, the set’s parts can be repurposed to create robots. These alternate builds cleverly disguise their vehicle origins by omitting wheels and strategically placing printed elements like headlights and taillights.

The yellow robot exhibits a BIONICLE® aesthetic and surprising poseability despite joint limitations.

The robot head construction ingeniously utilizes printed 3×3 quarter circle slopes, connected using D-snot bricks and brackets.

The black robot, constrained by fewer hinge elements, has limited poseability, relying on fixed joint techniques for stability.

Final Verdict: A Champion Set for Car and LEGO Fans

The LEGO Speed Champions 76924 Mercedes-AMG G 63 & SL 63 set is a well-balanced package. The contrasting sizes and styles of the SUV and convertible are effectively managed within the set’s piece count, offering diverse building experiences. Priced competitively, roughly equivalent to two single Speed Champions cars, it delivers excellent value.

While supercars typically dominate the Speed Champions theme, this set’s deviation with an SUV and convertible is a refreshing change. The G 63’s substantial presence ensures it stands out in any LEGO car collection, while the shared Mercedes-AMG branding and design language seamlessly integrate both models. This set is a must-have for LEGO Speed Champions enthusiasts and Mercedes-Benz aficionados alike.
