Alex Mercedes is rapidly making a name for himself in the competitive world of motorsport. Born in Miami, Florida in 2007, but with strong Jamaican roots, Alex entered the karting scene in 2015 and has quickly become a notable talent. Following in the footsteps of his father, John Mercedes, a celebrated rally driver in the Caribbean, racing is undeniably in Alex’s DNA.
Embarking on his karting journey in the Caribbean and the United States, Alex’s talent soon propelled him to the European karting circuit in 2018. This move marked a significant step up in competition, and Alex rose to the challenge, securing numerous victories and titles over the subsequent years. His promising performance caught the attention of prestigious programs, leading him to join a Junior Programme in 2019, further honing his skills and racecraft.
The 2020 season saw Alex compete in the demanding OK Junior and Junior ROK categories. He continued to excel in OK Junior racing throughout 2021 across various international series. His consistent performance at the top level was highlighted by impressive results, including finishing as runner-up in the WSK Euro Series and achieving third place in both the WSK Super Master Series and the WSK Final Cup, where he demonstrated his capability in the OK category.
By 2022, Alex transitioned to full-time OK category racing and continued to build on his success. A significant achievement that year was securing second place in the FIA Karting European Championship, underscoring his status as a top contender in international karting. He remained in the OK category in 2023, enjoying further triumphs, notably winning the highly competitive ‘Champions of the Future’ series. Adding to his accolades, Alex achieved second place in the FIA KZ2 World Cup and third in the FIA Karting European Championship, showcasing his versatility and skill across different karting formats.
The end of 2023 marked a pivotal moment in Alex’s career as he transitioned from karting to single-seater racing. He participated in the final two rounds of the Italian F4 Championship with Prema Racing, immediately demonstrating encouraging pace and adaptability to Formula 4 machinery. Looking ahead, Alex is set to compete full-time in Formula 4 in 2024, participating in the UAE, Italian, and Euro4 series. This move signifies a major step forward in his motorsport career as he aims to climb the ranks in single-seater racing and further establish himself as a future star in the sport.
