Behold, a champion of fuel economy in an unexpected form. Yes, it’s a Mercedes-Benz crossover, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 4MATIC to be exact, and it truly impressed us with its efficiency.
This story begins back in January when a family Disneyland trip was rerouted, leaving us with unused park tickets. Fast forward to August, we discovered the looming expiration date of these tickets and a very limited window for rescheduling. A quick plan was hatched, time off requested, and thanks to Mercedes-Benz USA and Page One Automotive, we secured a 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 4MATIC for an Anaheim round trip. This journey would be approximately 850 miles, plus additional miles exploring Southern California.
Under the hood of the GLB 250, you won’t find any complex or unusual technology. It features a straightforward, yet effective, turbocharged 2-liter inline four-cylinder engine. This powertrain delivers 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The fuel tank has a capacity of 15.9 gallons.
Despite these standard specifications, the fuel economy we experienced was remarkable. Even before the downhill stretch into Los Angeles, the GLB 250 was averaging well above the EPA highway estimate of 30 miles per gallon. The trip computer consistently displayed figures in the mid-30s (35-36 MPG) on the flat Interstate 5. Incredibly, after a 425-mile drive, a quarter of the fuel tank remained.
Knowing the return trip would involve an uphill climb, we refueled in the San Fernando Valley. Opting for Highway 99 on the way back, the journey home covered 399 miles from refuel to driveway. Again, the fuel gauge showed a quarter tank remaining. While conservative driving certainly played a role – maintaining speed limits in the right lane and smooth throttle inputs – the results still significantly exceeded EPA estimates, especially for a vehicle capable of 0-60 mph in just 6.5 seconds. For those seeking even more performance, the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 offers a 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds.
Despite its classification as a small crossover, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 provides ample space for five adults and their luggage. Its boxy design truly maximizes interior volume, a significant advantage in this segment.
Furthermore, the GLB 250 represents excellent value, especially considering its Mercedes-Benz pedigree. The base price starts at $40,600, which includes a generous list of standard features. These include a power driver’s seat with lumbar support and memory, rain-sensing wipers, keyless start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power liftgate, LED lighting, and a high-quality audio system. Notably, the stylish two-tone interior, in our case Neva Grey and black MB-Tex, is a no-cost option.
While the standard GLB 250 package is compelling, our test vehicle was equipped with several optional extras that enhanced the overall experience. Some options, like the AMG Line sport steering wheel, AMG Line Package, LED logo projectors, and garage door opener, might be considered less essential. However, features like wheel locking bolts, adjustable damping suspension, heated front seats, the Multimedia Package (navigation, augmented reality, traffic sign assist), and the Driver Assistance Package Lite (suite of active safety features) offer significant value and convenience, particularly for frequent drivers or families. The Premium Package, with its dual 10.25-inch displays, KEYLESS-GO, and a 115-volt power outlet, is also a worthwhile consideration.
With the $1,050 destination and delivery charge included, the as-tested price of this 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 4MATIC came to $50,995. This price point remains highly competitive for a premium compact crossover that blends solid performance with unexpectedly impressive fuel efficiency.
As proven time and again, an extended road trip provides the ideal setting to truly evaluate a vehicle. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 is a crossover that we would confidently and happily drive anywhere, anytime.
