2018 Mercedes C300 Center Console Jammed? More Like Center Console Cluttered and Cramped

Stepping into a loaner 2018 Mercedes C300 while awaiting my new GLA250, I was initially intrigued. The C-Class, Mercedes’ bread and butter, right? However, my first impressions quickly shifted from intrigue to a surprising sense of disappointment, particularly regarding the much-discussed center console. While “jammed” might be too strong a word in the literal sense, the center console contributes significantly to a feeling of being cramped and, frankly, cluttered.

The C300 boasts a physically larger size than the GLA250, yet the front cabin feels remarkably confined. My wife and I immediately noticed this sensation of being both too far apart and squeezed in simultaneously. The culprit? The expansive center console. It’s a broad structure that intrudes into the personal space of both driver and passenger, creating a barrier rather than a welcoming cockpit. Ironically, despite its size, practical storage seems lacking. Cupholders are conspicuously absent, or at least poorly integrated. One might fit awkwardly in front of the gear shifter, but it’s hardly a convenient or well-thought-out solution for a car in this class.

Beyond the center console, the feeling of being “jammed” extends to the overall interior experience. Rear passenger space is also compromised. My six-foot son found headroom lacking in the back, a common complaint exacerbated by the sunroof. This spatial inefficiency clashes sharply with the expectations set by the car’s exterior dimensions.

It’s not just the feeling of physical confinement that’s unsettling. The driving experience itself presents some jarring quirks. Gear shifts from first to second can be unexpectedly rough under light acceleration. The air conditioning fan operates with dramatic leaps in intensity, going from a gentle breeze at level 6 to a near gale at level 7, accompanied by a loud and intrusive fan motor hum. Even the sound system disappoints, sounding tinny and cheap, far removed from the premium audio experience one anticipates in a Mercedes. And the automated stop/start system is far from smooth, adding to the overall sense of refinement lacking in this C300.

Perhaps the biggest surprise, and not a pleasant one, is the discovery that the engine noise is artificially enhanced through the speakers. This manufactured sound further contributes to a feeling of disconnect and inauthenticity. The 2018 Mercedes C300, while possessing adequate power, ultimately feels like a missed opportunity. The center console, far from being a functional and elegant centerpiece, becomes a symbol of the car’s shortcomings – spacious in appearance but cramped in reality, and ultimately contributing to a less than stellar Mercedes experience. While my hopes remain high for the GLA250, this C300 loaner has certainly raised questions about what to expect from the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
