2015 Mercedes-Benz E350 Review: Still a Top Choice for Luxury and Comfort?

Unexpected car rentals can sometimes lead to pleasant surprises. My encounter with a 2015 Mercedes-Benz E350, a last-minute substitution at Denver International Airport, turned out to be one such occasion. Initially expecting a Cadillac XTS, I was offered a choice between a “BMW” or a “Mercedes.” Having recently reviewed a BMW 328i, the Mercedes option piqued my interest. This impromptu experience offered a fresh perspective on the 2015 Mercedes E-Class, a model still relevant in the used luxury car market.

First Glance: Exterior Elegance

The 2015 E350 in slate gray stood out immediately in the rental car lot. Surrounded by more mundane vehicles, its elegant presence was undeniable. It was easily the most attractive car in its section, and I was quite happy to take it for a spin, albeit for just an afternoon.

The initial impression was its size. The E350 is a substantial car, conveying a sense of solidity and presence. Yet, despite its size, the design remains sleek and elegant. The proportions are well-balanced, contributing to its stylish and sophisticated appearance. The slate gray paint further enhanced this upscale aesthetic, a welcome change from more flamboyant colors.

The color choice significantly elevates the car’s class. Imagine this shade on a performance car – it exudes understated luxury.

Interior Ambiance: Luxury and Refinement

Stepping inside the 2015 Mercedes E350, the interior immediately impressed with its high-quality materials and luxurious feel. It felt a notch above the BMW 3 Series in terms of opulence, creating a comfortable and premium environment.

On the Road: Driving Performance

The driving experience in the Mercedes E350 was largely positive. For a car of its size, it felt surprisingly composed and controlled. The 3.5L V6 engine delivered ample power, providing brisk acceleration from a standstill and confident highway cruising.

However, the brakes were a point of concern. They initially felt underpowered and lacked immediate responsiveness. The brake pedal had a soft, almost spongy feel, requiring significant pressure, especially at higher speeds, to achieve firm braking.

Despite the brake pedal feel, the E350 excels as a comfortable cruiser. Driving through Denver and into the Rocky Mountains along I-70 was a smooth and effortless experience. The car effortlessly covered miles and tackled inclines with ease. The engine provided plenty of torque, ensuring confident hill climbs. The cabin quietness was particularly noteworthy. Mercedes-Benz’s reputation for building serene interiors is well-deserved, and the 2015 E350 is no exception. This quietness makes it an ideal candidate for long journeys.

When faced with the winding mountain roads of Colorado, the E350’s size became more apparent. It felt less agile in tight corners and switchbacks. Engaging “sport” mode and utilizing the paddle shifters offered a slightly more engaging experience, but ultimately, the E350 is not designed for aggressive canyon carving.

Interior Comfort and Features

Mercedes-Benz interiors are known for their comfort, and the 2015 E350 upholds this reputation. The cabin is a pleasant space to spend time in, living up to pre-conceived expectations of Mercedes luxury. The quietness at highway speeds, combined with premium materials on the steering wheel and seats, contributes to an overall sense of quality and comfort.

The dashboard layout is elegant, although the wood trim might be a bit excessive for some tastes.

The center console is clean and well-organized, although the column-mounted gear selector is a slightly old-fashioned touch.

Rear passenger space is adequate. Legroom in the back is good, comfortably accommodating an average-sized adult.

Small details, like the analog clock in the center of the dashboard, add a touch of classic luxury.

The interior design attempts to blend sportiness with luxury, creating an interesting mix.

The overhead console is functional and well-integrated.

The white-faced analog gauges are easy to read and provide essential driving information clearly, complemented by a digital information display.

At night, the gauges invert to white on black for enhanced visibility.

The key fob is typical Mercedes, functional and well-designed.

One minor drawback is the seat design. While stylish and upholstered in high-quality materials, the seats are rather flat and wide, lacking sufficient lateral support for spirited driving. During more dynamic driving on mountain roads, the lack of bolstering became noticeable, detracting from the overall experience. They felt reminiscent of bench seats from older cars in terms of support. While bucket seats are not expected in this class, more side bolstering would be a welcome improvement, especially for drivers who occasionally enjoy more engaging driving.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Mercedes E350 Still Relevant?

As a refined and comfortable car for everyday driving and long journeys, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz E350 excels. It offers a smooth, solid ride on highways and possesses adequate power for quick acceleration in city driving. While it includes features like paddle shifters and a “sport” mode, it doesn’t quite translate into a genuinely sporty driving experience.

For those prioritizing luxury, comfort, and a relaxed driving experience, the 2015 Mercedes E-Class remains a compelling option, especially in the used car market. However, drivers seeking a more engaging and sporty sedan might find it lacking in dynamic handling and seat support for spirited driving. It’s a car that leans heavily towards comfort and luxury, making it a strong contender for buyers in that segment, even years after its initial release.
