Class-Leading Performance and Efficiency
The 2015 C63 stood out as a leader in its competitive class. Affalterbach’s new high-performance vehicles were unique in the segment for featuring an eight-cylinder biturbo engine. This powertrain choice resulted in not only formidable power delivery but also a deeply emotional engine sound – a hallmark of the AMG brand. Drivers experienced unmatched performance characterized by immense power and torque. The C63 S could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, while the C63 accomplished the same feat in 4.0 seconds. The top speeds were electronically limited to 155 mph for the C63 and 180 mph for the C63 S.
Christian Enderle, Head of Development Engine and Drivetrain at Mercedes-AMG GmbH, emphasized, “Naturally, the new Mercedes-AMG C63 is once again powered by an eight-cylinder engine. The passionate power delivery and highly emotional sound of our 4.0-liter V8 biturbo are truly compelling. At the same time, we are maintaining our leading role in the core issue of efficiency. No other high-performance V8 automobile is more fuel efficient than the new C63.”
Indeed, the C63 not only led in engine performance and data but also set new efficiency benchmarks. This high-performance car from Affalterbach showcased exceptional fuel economy, positioning it at the forefront of its segment. Remarkably, the 2015 C63 was recognized as the most fuel-efficient eight-cylinder, high-performance vehicle globally. It achieved an impressive 32 percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to its predecessor, the C63 AMG with the 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, all while delivering even greater performance and the iconic AMG V8 sound.
The Heart of the Beast: New V8 Biturbo Engine
The significant improvement in efficiency was largely attributed to the new drive package. The M177 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, closely related to the M178 engine powering the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, was the key. This innovative eight-cylinder engine was characterized by its exceptional power delivery, lightweight design, high efficiency, and environmental consciousness. It also met stringent standards for noise and vibration comfort.
A standout feature of this newly developed eight-cylinder engine was its biturbocharging system. The two turbochargers were not positioned outside the cylinder banks but rather nestled within the cylinder V – a configuration known as the “hot inside V.” This design offered benefits such as a more compact engine, optimized responsiveness, and reduced exhaust emissions.
Fuel mixture preparation was handled by Mercedes-exclusive petrol piezo direct injection with spray-guided combustion. The third generation of this combustion process was developed to meet future emission regulations. An advanced engine cooling system ensured consistent high performance, even under demanding race-track conditions.
Dynamic Exhaust System as Standard
Engine sound is a critical element of the AMG experience, embodying fascination and emotionality. The C63 and C63 S models featured a standard sports exhaust system equipped with a dynamic electronically controlled exhaust flap. Depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program, the engine note could range from subtle for long journeys to intensely emotional for spirited driving. The exhaust flap, located in the front third of the system, was infinitely variable and controlled based on the drive program, driver input, and engine speed.
An optional Performance exhaust system, featuring three electronically controlled exhaust flaps, was available for both engine variants. This system provided an even greater degree of control over the exhaust sound via a button on the center console. In “Comfort” mode, the engine was quieter and more refined, while in “Sport +” and “Race” modes, the V8 sound became more dominant, evoking the sound of a race touring car, complete with acoustic up-shift and distinctive double de-clutching feedback. Beyond drive program settings, the engine sound could be adjusted individually at any time with the push of a button.
C63 S Exclusive: Dynamic Engine Mounts
A unique feature for the C63 S in its class was the inclusion of dynamic engine mounts, a technology borrowed from the Mercedes-AMG GT. These mounts addressed the inherent conflict between comfort and handling by actively reducing vibrations from the engine and transmission unit. The dynamic mounts could seamlessly and rapidly adjust their stiffness based on driving conditions and style. Softer mounts enhanced comfort by minimizing noise and vibration, while stiffer mounts improved handling and agility. During dynamic driving, the driver experienced a more direct connection to the vehicle, with enhanced feedback and more responsive steering. The overall result was a more precise and engaging driving feel.
“One Man, One Engine” Craftsmanship
Powerful V8 engines have long been a core competency of AMG. Mercedes-AMG GmbH took full responsibility for both the development and production of the 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine. Manufactured in the Affalterbach engine shop according to the “one man, one engine” principle, each engine was a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and quality.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed Sport Transmission
A significant contributor to the direct and sporty character of the 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 was its transmission. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission offered a compelling blend of bespoke dynamics and exceptional versatility. Extensively redeveloped for the C63, this transmission boasted even faster reaction times.
Whether shifting automatically or manually via steering wheel paddles, upshifts and downshifts were noticeably quicker compared to the previous model. The transmission exhibited significantly more spontaneity, particularly in “Sport +” and manual modes, thanks to optimizations in both hardware and software. The aluminum shift paddles on the Performance steering wheel further enhanced the dynamic feel by transmitting driver inputs even more rapidly.
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission offered a wide range of driving modes through the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT system: “Controlled Efficiency”, “Sport”, “Sport +”, and the C63 S exclusive “Race” mode. These modes were selectable via the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT switch. A “temporary M” function, activated by using the paddles, provided an extra layer of dynamic control in any mode.
AMG Adaptive Sport Suspension
The C63 was engineered for fascinating agility, high cornering speeds, and exceptional neutrality. It featured an independent suspension system with a high proportion of aluminum components, performance-oriented kinematics, electronically controlled shock absorbers, and AMG-specific elastokinematics. The AMG Adaptive sport suspension allowed drivers to tailor the car’s characteristics across three stages, ranging from maximum sporting performance to enhanced long-distance comfort.
The front of the C63 utilized a four-link front suspension with motorsport-derived radially mounted brakes. Independent steering knuckles and a wider track enabled higher lateral acceleration. The multilink rear suspension with independent wheel mounts also featured increased negative camber. To optimize traction and dynamics, the C63 incorporated a mechanical locking differential at the rear, while the C63 S was equipped with an electronic rear locking differential. Both differentials minimized wheel slip on the inside of corners, allowing for earlier acceleration out of corners and enhanced stability during high-speed braking. The electronic locking rear differential in the C63 S offered even faster and more precise control compared to the mechanical solution, further extending the vehicle’s dynamic capabilities. The standard 3-stage ESP® system, with “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode”, and “ESP OFF” functions, worked in concert with the locking rear differential to optimize dynamics.
Electromechanical speed-sensitive sport steering ensured precise and agile handling, providing a direct steering ratio and optimized response. Variable power assistance adapted steering force based on vehicle speed, lateral acceleration, and the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program.
The C63 came standard with titanium grey painted and polished 18-inch alloy wheels, while the C63 S featured titanium grey and polished 19-inch alloy wheels. Optional sport cup tires were available to further enhance grip levels. For the first time, a high-performance, ceramic-composite brake system was offered as an option for the C63 S.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT Drive Programs
The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT system provided four distinct drive programs to tailor the C63’s driving character. The C63 S added an exclusive “Race” program for maximum individualization and track-focused performance. Drivers could select programs via a switch to the left of the touchpad, choosing from pre-configured modes or an “Individual” mode for extensive customization.
“Controlled Efficiency” mode prioritized balanced driving with a comfortable suspension and steering setup, along with fuel-optimized drivetrain settings, including smoother gearshifts and a quieter engine sound. The new “Gliding Function” further improved fuel efficiency. When the driver lifted off the accelerator between 37 and 99 mph, the MCT transmission clutch opened, decoupling the engine from the drivetrain and reducing engine revs to idle.
“Sport” and “Sport +” modes amplified the car’s sporting intensity. “Race” mode, exclusive to the C63 S, was optimized for demanding track driving.
