Reviving a Classic: Comprehensive Detailing of a 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 is a roadster that perfectly blends luxury and performance. Sporting a robust 302HP engine and 339ft/lb of torque, further enhanced by the AMG Sport Package, this vehicle offers an exhilarating driving experience. While not the full AMG SL55, the SL500 provides a sense of sophisticated power and refined engineering. Stepping into the driver’s seat of a 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500, you immediately understand why it remains a sought-after model for car enthusiasts.

Recently, the owner of this Aegean Blue Metallic beauty contacted us at cardetailinguk.com to address some minor imperfections despite its low mileage (only 7,000 miles). While the paintwork was free of swirls, a closer inspection revealed scratches and noticeable water spots, particularly on horizontal surfaces. Adding to this, the exterior was coated in general grime and a significant accumulation of brake dust on the wheels.

This detailing project wasn’t about dramatic paint correction transformations. Instead, it presented an opportunity to showcase the meticulous care and attention to detail that defines professional car detailing. Our focus shifted to documenting the often-overlooked areas, providing an educational glimpse into maintaining your vehicle to the highest standard. Join us as we detail every step in bringing this 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 back to its pristine condition.

Interior Detailing: Restoring the Cockpit of the SL500

The interior of this 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500, while well-maintained, was due for a comprehensive cleaning and protection treatment. Our goal was to revitalize the dark interior surfaces, removing accumulated dirt and applying a protective layer to preserve its sophisticated appeal.

We began by thoroughly vacuuming the carpets and floor mats to remove loose debris. Next, a mild solution of Woolite and water was prepared. Using microfiber towels, we meticulously cleaned all interior surfaces. Convertibles, especially those with dark interiors like this 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500, often harbor hidden dirt. Despite appearing clean, the microfiber towels revealed a surprising amount of removed grime, proving the necessity of a deep clean.

Attention then turned to the often-neglected cracks and crevices within the interior. These areas tend to accumulate dust and debris over time. Using detail brushes and our cleaning solution, we ensured every nook and cranny was free from contamination.

A notable feature of the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 is the engine start/stop button located on top of the shift knob, a testament to its thoughtful design.

Leather seats, particularly the driver’s side, are prone to accumulating dirt and dye transfer. Despite the low mileage of this 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500, the driver’s seat showed signs of denim dye transfer and general soiling.

To address this, we used an all-purpose cleaner (APC) diluted to a 10:1 ratio. Gently agitating the leather with a soft leather brush effectively lifted the dirt and dye.

Following cleaning, we applied Optimum Protectant Plus to all leather surfaces, including the seats. This UV protectant enhances the leather without adding unwanted shine or a greasy feel, preserving the original, factory-fresh appearance of the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 interior.

Finally, the pedals, constantly exposed to dirty shoes, were addressed. APC and a stiff brush were used to clean the pedals, followed by wiping with a damp cloth to remove any residue. It’s crucial to avoid using products that leave a greasy or slippery finish on pedals, ensuring driver safety.

Rinsing revealed water beading, indicating existing wax or sealant. These protective layers needed to be removed before polishing to ensure optimal results. Chemical Guys Wash & Clear was used at a paint prep ratio (2oz/gal) to strip the existing protection. A Gilmour foam gun was used to pre-soak the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500, followed by a two-bucket wash method with Chemical Guys Wash & Clear in the wash bucket. Given the level of contamination, the wash mitt was thoroughly rinsed in the rinse bucket with a Grit Guard after each section to prevent reintroducing dirt.

After washing, the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 was clayed using Optimum Instant Detailer as a clay lubricant. Claying removed embedded contaminants from both horizontal and vertical surfaces, preparing the paint for polishing. The level of contamination necessitated a thorough claying process to achieve a smooth surface. A second foam wash followed the claying process to ensure the surface was completely clean and ready for polishing.

Menzerna PO203 was selected for a one-step polishing process. This versatile polish provides both cut and finishing capabilities. After a test section, PO203 paired with appropriate pads proved to be the optimal choice for this 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Multiple IPA wipedowns were performed after polishing to ensure no fillers or masking agents interfered with the true finish.

Protection and Final Touches: Sealing and Waxing the SL500

Following polishing, an IPA wipedown was performed, followed by an Optimum Instant Detailer wipedown to ensure a clean surface for sealant application. Optimum Opti-seal, known for its ease of application and durable protection without a plastic-like appearance, was chosen as the sealant. Applied with a red applicator pad and buffed out with a soft MF towel and Optimum Instant Detailer, Opti-seal provides excellent durability, even through harsh weather conditions.

P21S 100% wax was then applied by hand using a separate red applicator pad. While not the most durable wax, P21S 100% wax delivers a rich finish, easy application and removal, and requires minimal cure time.

Often-overlooked areas like the underside of the trunk lid above the license plate were also addressed. This area on the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 had accumulated years of grime.
