Schuco 1968 Mercedes 280SL: A Diecast Dream for Pagoda Fans

For collectors of diecast model cars, particularly those with a passion for Mercedes-Benz, the anticipation of a new Schuco release is always exciting. There’s a certain magic in unwrapping a Schuco model, a feeling reminiscent of childhood holidays. It’s commendable that Schuco continues to produce full-featured diecast models, resisting the trend towards resin or composite materials.

As a devoted Mercedes enthusiast with a space in my collection already dedicated to the iconic Pagoda SL, represented by an older Anson model acquired in 2000, the Schuco 1968 Mercedes 280sl was a must-have. While the Anson held its own on display, alongside more premium models, closer inspection revealed its shortcomings – noticeable headlight mounting pins and slight scale inaccuracies. An upgrade was definitely in order.

The “Moosgrun metallic” (Moss Green Metallic) finish of this Schuco model is undeniably striking and perfectly complements the elegant lines of the 280SL. The model itself is well-constructed, although it does exhibit some fragility; a minor chrome trim piece detached from the front fender during handling, but was easily reattached with a touch of Tamiya glue. Pleasant surprises include small details like a key in the ignition and a functional glove box. While the interior lacks carpeting, the trunk opens widely, showcasing well-replicated hinges and a non-removable spare wheel. The representation of the 2.8L inline 6 M130 engine is also noteworthy.

A brown soft top is included with the model, which is a nice addition. However, the omission of the signature Pagoda hardtop is a puzzling choice by Schuco, considering its iconic status and integral part of the 280SL’s design.

Ultimately, acquiring this Schuco 1968 Mercedes 280SL model cost approximately $110 Canadian, including shipping, placing it comfortably under the $100 US price point. At this price, it represents excellent value for money and a worthwhile addition to any collection.
