2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 Cabriolet: A Timeless Blend of Luxury and Refinement

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has long been synonymous with sophisticated design and unparalleled comfort, and the W212 generation, particularly the pre-facelift models from 2010, held a special place in the hearts of many enthusiasts. When Mercedes-Benz announced a facelift for the 2014 model year, there was understandable apprehension. Could the improvements enhance what was already considered by many to be a benchmark in automotive elegance? Having spent considerable time with the 2014 Mercedes E350 Cabriolet, we can confidently say that the update not only maintains the E-Class’s esteemed position but elevates it with subtle yet significant enhancements. While the iconic rectangular quad headlights and the distinctive ponton-style rear fenders of the earlier W212 models are no more, what remains is a beautifully cohesive and undeniably handsome vehicle.

Having previously experienced the E-Class in various forms, including both W212 and W211 E350 sedans and the pre-facelift 2014 E550 Cabriolet, I came to this review with a strong understanding of the platform’s capabilities. The E550, with its twin-turbo V8, was a powerhouse, delivering effortless performance. The 2014 Mercedes E350, however, takes a different approach. It forgoes forced induction in favor of a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine. While the 7-speed automatic transmission may not offer the lightning-fast shifts of some competitors, its smooth and deliberate nature perfectly complements the E350’s relaxed and luxurious character. The V6 engine still delivers competitive power and torque figures, accompanied by a pleasingly subtle intake growl when you demand more from the throttle.

In a market increasingly obsessed with overt sportiness, the 2014 Mercedes E350 Cabriolet is a refreshing departure. Our test vehicle was equipped with the Sport package, a designation that thankfully proved to be more about subtle enhancements than a drastic transformation. The package included stylish 18-inch AMG wheels, drilled pedals, and supportive multi-contour seats, but crucially, it avoided the pitfalls of harsh suspension setups or overly aggressive, artificially weighted steering. The result is a car that balances precision with comfort in a way that defines a true luxury vehicle. The 14 Mercedes E350 glides down the road with composure, providing a welcome layer of isolation from imperfections, a hallmark of a well-engineered luxury car. Even with its fabric roof, the cabin remains impressively quiet when closed, and when lowered, drafts are minimal, making open-top cruising a genuine pleasure. The ride quality is supple and comfortable, and the chassis exhibits remarkable rigidity, free from unwanted scuttle shake or rattles even on less-than-perfect road surfaces.

This sense of serenity extends to the interior of the 2014 E350 Cabriolet. While it may not boast the extravagant, headline-grabbing technology found in ultra-high-end convertibles, the cabin exudes a sense of quality and craftsmanship that rivals those pricier competitors. When compared to something like a fully optioned BMW 4-Series convertible, which can easily reach similar price points, the larger E-Class feels distinctly more substantial and luxurious. Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND infotainment system remains a personal favorite within the luxury segment, thanks to its intuitive interface, crisp graphics, and overall ease of use. It avoids the frustratingly complex submenus that plague some rival systems, instead presenting key functions in a logical, horizontally oriented layout. The column-mounted gear selector, while not universally loved, feels perfectly at home in the relaxed ambiance of the E350 Cabriolet. For those moments when manual gear selection is desired, steering wheel-mounted paddles are readily accessible. The rest of the interior is crafted from high-quality materials and features a design that feels both elegant and contemporary, fully justifying our test car’s as-tested price of just under $75,000. For those seeking a refined, comfortable open-top experience without the need for excessive “sportiness,” the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 Cabriolet is a compelling choice.
